
The Commuter Lead is responsible for developing a sense of community for a commuter "pod" (group of 8-10 first year students) and hosting weekly meals for first year commuter students. The goal of these meals is to build community and discuss student success topics over a meal. Commuter leads should be welcoming and inclusive in how they interact and build relationships with students.
Responsibilities
- Participate in training for Commuter Leads as it relates to facilitation skills, creating inclusive communities, campus resources and program details such as meal access, tracking attendance, and reporting.
- Host 1-2 weekly meals at various campus eateries and residential dining halls
- Facilitate shared discussions based on topics and transition support, provided by CSP Intern, during weekly meals
- Provide outreach to students in your pod (8-10 students) to build community, offer college tips and general transition support
- Coordinate one shared meal (outside of weekly meals) each month during Fall and Spring semesters for students in your pod
- Track student attendance and participation at meals through reports and/or feedback. Follow-up with students who have not been participating to check-in
- Report student attendance to Commuter Success Program Intern
- Assist CSP Intern with planning and organizing social engagement events
Qualifications
Required
- Current University of Minnesota student enrolled in at least 6 credits or more for the academic year 2024- 2025
- Familiarity with undergraduate commuter student transition issues at the University of Minnesota
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion
- Desire to work in a flexible and team focused atmosphere
- Desire to serve new students in helping them transition to the University
- Strong organizational, administrative, communication, customer service and leadership skills
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 to be maintained throughout employment and reviewed each semester
- Enrolled as a student through Spring 2025
Preferred
- Personal experience as a commuter student at the University of Minnesota
- Knowledge of the PES Program
- Experience planning events for college students
Compensation and Hours
This position is paid at an hourly rate of $15.00 an hour with an average of 3-4 hours/week during the academic year. 1-2 weekly meals are included based on your scheduled meal times.
