Communications & Design Intern

Orientation & Transition Experiences (OTE) is seeking a Communications & Design Intern who will design a variety of branded projects, and assets related to new student Orientation, Welcome Week, and ongoing OTE programs. The ideal candidate should possess exceptional creativity, graphic design skills, an interest in communication strategy, and the ability to adapt to current student media interest. This position reports to the Strategic Communications & Marketing Manager.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities 
  • Design and update various print and digital materials (posters, t-shirts, annual reports, mailers, calendars, and various other marketing materials);
  • Conceptualize and create concepts for first-year, transfer, and transition program branding; approved concepts are developed and applied to all communications items;
  • Create and update digital graphics for the Transition Hub, social media, electronic displays, and mass emails
  • Assist in facilitating the production process of various projects: apply content from staff to design, working with editors, submitting for approval, etc.
  • Assist with photo and video production
  • Assist in the Orientation Resource Fair and other events related to Orientation and Welcome Week

Qualifications

Required Qualifications 
  • Student employees must be at least 18 years old to work for Orientation & Transition Experiences.
  • Enrolled as an undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota in good academic standing through spring semester. 
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher to be maintained throughout employment and reviewed each semester
  • Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite design programs (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom, etc.)
  • Experience designing for print and web
  • Experience designing for social media
  • Ability to quickly learn new skills, particularly in regards to technology, software, and design
  • Ability to work with professional staff to understand project needs, ask clarifying questions, and communicate regularly with team members
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, be a creative problem solver, be detailed and organized, and have a conceptual aptitude
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team.
 
Preferred Qualifications 
  • Knowledge of University of Minnesota branding standards;
  • Experience with video editing and motion graphics.
  • Photography and photo editing experience
  • Coding experience

Schedule

The Design Intern will maintain a schedule of 10-20 hours per week through the academic year with at least 3 in office days. 

  • Summer hours will include  25-30 hours in person
  • This position will start in mid April, 2026

The Communications & Design Intern will primarily work in the Orientation & Transition Experiences office located in Coffman Memorial Union.

Compensation

The Communication & Design Intern is paid $15.75 per hour.
