Summer Road Construction: Plan Ahead for a Smooth Arrival

Road construction near the University of Minnesota campus, including major work on I-94 and University Avenue, may cause significant traffic delays this summer. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) recommends allowing extra time for your commute, especially during peak travel times.

To help you plan your trip, MNDOT has created a map showing the best routes to the East River Road Garage, our recommended parking location for Orientation.

University Avenue Road Construction

Through July 7: University Ave is fully closed between 15th and Walnut to reconstruct the Rec Center bus stop. During this time, 15th Ave will be fully open. The signed detour will be to use 15th to 5th St to Oak St.

Previously: To access University Ave Ramp, people will have to drive north on Walnut St and turn left on a temporarily two way University Ave. There should not be any effects to transit, as they're already detoured off University.

Beginning May 19 through the summer, University Avenue will be reduced to one vehicle lane between 13th Avenue SE and Oak Street SE with closures on Pleasant Street SE and Church Street SE. Please plan for increased travel times due to construction impacts, including:

  • University Avenue will be reduced to one lane between 13th Avenue SE and Oak Street SE.
  • The Southbound lane from University Avenue will be closed on Pleasant Street.
  • Church Street SE will be closed at University Avenue.
