Assistant Director for Leadership Training and Development

A primary function of Orientation & Transition Experiences (OTE) is the coordination and development of a comprehensive student leadership and training program. The Assistant Director for Leadership Training & Development, along with a Student Leadership Intern, are responsible for the development, planning, implementation, and assessment of the student leadership training of 28 Orientation Leaders and 350+ student volunteer Welcome Week Leaders. This position will also support the training of 10 Transfer Student Ambassadors. OTE programs serve several populations including freshman students, transfer students, and parents/families. This position has a dual report to the Associate Directors for Orientation Programs & Student Transition Experiences.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree plus at least four years of relevant work experience.
  • Two years previous experience in a higher education environment, orientation programming, leadership development and training, or experience in other related areas.
  • In-depth understanding of student development and student transition issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and written.
  • Ability to manage details related to leader schedules, programs logistics and training implementation.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusive excellence.
  • Position requires work on evenings and weekends.
  • Employment is contingent upon completion of background verification with satisfactory results as required by law and University policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, or other related areas.
  • Two years previous experience in a higher education environment, orientation programming, leadership development and training, or experience in other related areas.
  • Previous experience developing training and facilitating leadership development workshops.
  • Collaborative and diplomatic relationship style; promoting respect and practice of civility and inclusivity in the workplace.
  • Ability to work and communicate across organizational programs and priorities.
  • Previous supervisory experience of staff (student or professional).
  • Previous experience in orientation, transition and/or retention programming.
  • Previous experience coaching or mentoring individuals and teams.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Ability to make data-driven decisions regarding programmatic efforts.

OTE Student Leader Training, Curriculum and Development (60%)

  • Plan, coordinate and develop a comprehensive student leadership curriculum for all student leaders within OTE (Orientation Leaders, Transfer Student Leaders, Welcome Week Leaders, Student Interns, and Office Assistants).
  • Develop and articulate training and development goals and ensure training opportunities align with stated goals for all student leaders (fall, spring, summer and welcome week training).
  • Develop, plan, implement, and assess all training tools, presenters, and logistical processes for OTE programs in collaboration with the Associate Director. Training topics include: social change model and theories, StrengthsFinder®, value and identity, equity and diversity, student transitions, University resources, team development, and more.
  • Serve as the lead facilitator/instructor for all Orientation Leader training programs including many evening and weekend commitments. The programming consists of (but is not limited to) three overnight retreats annually, spring semester weekly meetings, an Orientation prep week in May and a Welcome Week prep week in August (times will vary and may be outside of regular work hours).
  • Create student leader performance management plans that include goal setting, evaluation of role responsibilities and personal/professional development.
  • Coordinate opportunities for University departments to meet with and present to student leaders during training (over 40 departments total).
  • Oversee the logistics of training implementation including room reservations, guest presenters, technical needs, supplies, Canvas modules, food, etc.
  • Assess the effectiveness of student leadership programs utilizing training and development goals, the Student Development Outcomes, and the Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Develop and sustain relationships with key University faculty, staff, and student partners to further program goals.
  • Plan and coordinate a centralized student leader annual hiring and selection process.
  • Provide student leaders with timely feedback from program participants
  • Oversee all communications with student leaders including newsletters, videos, social media, training manuals, and personalized schedules.
  • Coordinate all Welcome Week Leader training programs alongside the Associate and Assistant director including up to three trainings during the spring semester and Welcome Week Leader prep week in August.
  • Work with Associate Director of STE to determine and craft Welcome Week Leader small group meeting content that takes place during Welcome Week.
  • Consult and collaborate with OTE student staff supervisors regarding position descriptions, recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development opportunities.
  • Oversee training and development budget with supervisors.
  • Work with OTE team members to staff all events and manage student leader schedules as necessary.

Supervision (20%)

  • Plan and implement the recruitment, hiring and onboarding of the Student Interns.
  • Supervise the Student Leadership Intern
  • Conduct in-person meetings with student leaders to provide feedback and further personal and professional development.
  • Implement a holistic, 360 performance review process of paid student leaders.
  • Manage student leader and volunteer contracts.
  • Provide on-site support and supervision for staff during programs, troubleshooting student staff issues and conflicts.

Assist the comprehensive mission of OTE (20%)

  • Assist with the planning and implementation of programs within OTE including but not limited to Orientation, Welcome Week, and Student Transition Experience events.
  • Participate in professional staff training, meetings, and projects.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge on trends and issues in the orientation, transition, and retention field.
  • Attend trainings and national conferences to learn best practices from others.
  • Publish and present findings and best practices identified in OTE.

This position has the Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) classification in the Student Services Job Family Professional 3, is 100% time, 12-month annually renewable appointment.  This position is considered a strategic, mid-level position.  Salary range is $50,000 - $52,000, is commensurate with experience, and includes a substantial benefits package.
