Student Leadership Intern

The Student Leadership Intern is responsible for recruiting, training, supervising and supporting student leaders and their implementation of transitional programming. With a focus on training, learning, and development, the Student Leadership Intern will be involved in spring and summer training for Orientation Leaders, Transfer Student Leaders, and Welcome Week Leaders. Additionally, the Student Leadership Intern will provide peer supervision and mentoring to all three student leader teams throughout Orientation and Welcome Week programming and preparation.

Position Specific Responsibilities

  • Recruitment and selection of student leader roles, including Orientation Leaders (OLs), Transfer Student Leaders (TSLs), and Welcome Week Leaders (WWLs)
  • Train student leader roles for program preparation and student leader development
    • Serve as a Teaching Assistant for OUE 3311 - Leadership Development for University Student Leaders - by supporting curriculum development and course planning
    • Plan and implement spring TSL training
    • Plan and implement spring WWL Conference
    • Plan and Execute OL Summer Training and TSL Summer Training
    • Plan and Execute OL training for Welcome Week
    • Plan and Execute WWL Summer Training
  • Supervision of student leader roles during Orientation and Welcome Week programming
    • Provide day to day supervision and support of OLs and TSLs during programming
      • Facilitate effective Morning Meetings and Debrief sessions
      • Provide multi-modal feedback to both student leader roles
    • Oversee Orientation Leader supervision of Welcome Week Leader team
  • Facilitate one, all student staff professional development trainings per month (Oct-Apr)
  • Provide support for Welcome Week events, specifically Welcome Week Check-in, and other events as assigned. This includes, but is not limited to, troubleshooting and providing oversight of events, etc.
  • Engage in active communication with peers and supervisor
  • Offer support and assistance to professional staff through engagement in various projects
  • Pursue a supporting role in maintaining front desk operations, including answering phone calls
  • Supporting office initiatives and events related to the matriculation process
  • Balancing academic responsibilities with the requirements of the position

  • Four semesters of completed coursework at university/college level
  • Previous leadership experience
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher to be maintained throughout employment and reviewed each semester
  • Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credits as a student through Fall 2022 semester
  • Not enrolled in classes past 3:00pm on Wednesday nights in spring semester for OUE3311 course support
  • Demonstrated time management skills
  • Can positively receive and utilize constructive feedback
  • Ability to receive and delegate tasks
  • Self-accountability
  • Availability during the Fall, Spring, and Summer to be able to fill the required hours of the position
  • Not planning to study abroad before September 6, 2022 and will not graduate prior to December 2022

Preferred Position Qualifications

  • Prior experiences as an Orientation Leader or Transfer Student Leader, or OTE office experience preferred
  • Prior teaching or training experience
  • Strong organizational, administrative, customer service, and leadership skills including the ability to effectively communicate, delegate, and work to develop a team
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment while delivering high quality work along a specific set of deadlines
  • Ability to be able to communicate effectively with professional staff and student staff that they supervise
  • Self-motivated and possesses a desire to work in a flexible team and focused atmosphere

Schedule & Important Dates

October-December (5-10 hours/week)

  • Review assessment data from Orientation and Weeks of Welcome programs to prepare for student leader training
  • Complete Fall training series to prepare for work responsibilities
  • Prepare for spring recruitment of Orientation Leader, Transfer Student Leader, and Welcome Week Leader roles
  • Preparation for OUE3311: Leadership Development for University Student Leaders

January-April (15-20 hours/week)

  • Support the recruitment and selection of 28-30 Orientation Leaders
  • Support the multi-staged Orientation Leader interview process including hosting mandatory information sessions
  • Implement the recruitment and selection of 12-14 Transfer Student Leaders
  • Assist in the coordination of the Orientation Leader and Transfer Student Leader leadership development training
  • Serve on teaching team for the one-credit course OUE3311: Leadership Development for University Student Leaders
  • Attend and facilitate at Spring Student Leader Retreat from March 19-21, 2021
  • Conduct 1-1 meetings with Orientation Leaders and Transfer Student Leaders
  • Implement the recruitment and selection of 400+ Welcome Week Leaders
  • Facilitate the Welcome Week Leader Conference
  • Plan for summer orientation training of the Orientation Leaders and Transfer Student Leaders

May-July (40 hours/week)

  • Implement summer orientation training with Orientation Leaders
  • Provide supervision and feedback to Orientation Leader team
  • Facilitate daily morning and debrief meetings with Orientation Leader team
  • Implement summer orientation training with Transfer Student Leaders
  • Provide supervisions and feedback to Transfer Student Leaders
  • Continue preparation for Welcome Week Leader training
  • Welcome Week Program Event Support as assigned
  • Optional live on-campus in a residence hall and provide on-call support during program (room/board provided)

July-September (40 hours/week)

  • Facilitate Welcome Week Leader training, Orientation Leader Welcome Week Training, and Transfer Student Leader Welcome Week Training
  • Support Orientation Leaders and Transfer Student Leaders through orientation programming
  • Provide support Orientation Leaders, Transfer Student Leaders, and Welcome Week Leaders
  • Provide Welcome Week program support and duties as assigned


The Student Leadership Intern is paid $13.50 per hour and works 5-10 hours per week during the Fall, 10-15 hours per week during the Spring, and 40 hours per week throughout the summer. They are eligible for overtime pay for weeks requiring more than 40 hours.
