Parent Coordinator

The Parent Coordinators are responsible for managing the Parent Orientation program for both first-year and transfer students. In spring semester, The Parent Coordinators represent Orientation & Transition Experiences during the admissions commitment event session. During Orientation programs, they will present multiple sessions during orientation, engage with family members, troubleshoot family concerns. Coordinators will also support the Spring Transfer programming (January).

  • Represent OTE at spring semester commitment events held by the Office of Admissions
  • Assist with the preparation and implementation of Parent Orientation.
  • Interact with parents/families (help with check-in, answer questions, give directions, etc.).
  • Introduce and facilitate program presentations, including co-presenting sessions with professional staff.
  • Organize and host guests during the Evening Program at freshman orientation.
  • Assist OTE staff and U of M partners as needed.
  • Support the Families First event held by Parent and Family Program
  • Be available during Parents Weekend in Fall 2021 & Fall 2022
  • Trouble-shoot and perform various duties as assigned.

Objectives & Goals

Through this experience, a Parent Coordinator will:

  • Learn to work in a challenging environment, demonstrating flexibility and problem-solving skills
  • Develop a sense of responsibility and professionalism through work with the OTE professional and student staff, Orientation Leaders, and Transfer Student Leaders
  • Cultivate accountability through timely and quality completion of work
  • Gain experience in setting and meeting personal and professional goals
  • Work independently and interdependently with other OTE interns, supervisors, and staff to make progress toward goals
  • Demonstrate personal strengths and improve upon weaknesses to enhance self-confidence and promote confidence in others

This position reports to Lisa Gruszka, Orientation Programs

  • Proven ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent public speaking abilities and assertive communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of the student orientation process and the University.
  • Ability to multi-task and to perform well in high stress situations.
  • Flexibility and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Positive attitude and ability to work well within a team.
  • Must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.75
  • Self-accountability
  • Availability during the Fall, Spring, and Summer to be able to fill the required hours of the position
  • Not planning to study abroad before September 4, 2022 and will not graduate prior to December 2022
  • Enrolled¬†a minimum of 6 credits as a student through Fall 2022 semester

Preferred Position Qualifications

  • Prior experiences as an Orientation Leader or Transfer Student Leader, or OTE office experience preferred
  • Prior event planning experience
  • Prior public speaking experience
  • Strong organizational, administrative, customer service, and leadership skills including the ability to effectively communicate, delegate, and work to develop a team
  • Self-motivated and possesses a desire to work in a flexible team and focused atmosphere

Schedule

November-December (10-15 hours)

  • Support the recruitment of 28-30 Orientation Leaders/12 Transfer Student Leaders
  • Prepare for January Orientation sessions
  • Attending monthly OTE training

January-April (15-20 hours)

  • Support the commitment events held by the Office of Admissions
  • Attending monthly OTE training

May-July (40-45 hours/week)

  • Summer training and preparation for Parent Orientation
  • Implement Freshman Parent Orientation
  • Implement Transfer Parent Orientation
  • Support Orientation Leader Training
  • Deliver daily welcome as part of the Orientation program

August-September (30-40 hours/week)

  • Implement Freshman Parent Orientation
  • Implement Transfer Parent Orientation
  • Participate in population-specific parent orientation evening programming
  • Support Parent & Family Programs Welcome Week Programming
  • Provide Welcome Week Program support and duties as assigned

Parent Coordinators are paid $13.50 per hour. They are eligible for overtime pay for weeks requiring more than 40 hours. Parent Coordinators can anticipate working 10-15 hours during the Fall semester, and 15-20 hours during the Spring semester. Summer work hours will range from 40-50 hours per week.
