New Student Checklist

After you confirm your enrollment, you will be able to access your New Student Checklist at checklist.umn.edu.  Here is an example of some of the items you will find on your personalized checklist:

  • Complete your Tell Us About Yourself Survey
    This 15 minute survey will provide your advisor with the information to help you register for fall classes.
  • Select Your Orientation dates
    You can select your two-day on-campus Orientation dates after you complete your Tell Us About Yourself survey. 
  • Complete assigned placement tests
    Placement tests must be completed one week prior to your Orientation date

Plus, any additional college-specific checklist items.

What to Bring

USE THIS PACKING CHECKLIST AS YOU PLAN FOR YOUR NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

  • University Internet ID and memorized password
  • Your seven-digit student ID number (you will need to provide it during the orientation process)
  • $6.00 per day for parking
  • Photo ID for U Card
  • Notebook and pen or pencil
  • Comfortable clothing and shoes (air conditioned buildings)
  • Backpack for materials
  • Umbrella in case of rain
  • Driving directions to campus

OVERNIGHT ITEMS FOR FRESHMEN ONLY (REQUIRED FOR JUNE/JULY PROGRAMS)

  • Overnight toiletries (June and July dates only, no required overnight program in August)
  • A pillow, sheets, blanet and towel will be provided

Overnight Accommodations

JUNE/JULY PROGRAMS

A space in Comstock Hall is reserved for you between your Day 1 and Day 2 of your Orientation program (required stay).

If you need to stay an extra night before or after your Orientation 
date, space will be available in Yudof Hall.  The cost is $35 per night, including tax, payment and registration take place online. Check in anytime after 3 p.m.

Please note: IF you stay in Yudof the night prior to your Orientation date, you will need to check out of Yudof before you check-in for Orientation. You can bring your luggage to the Orientation Day 1 luggage table just outside Yudof. We will then move your luggage to Comstock Hall, where you will retrieve it when checking into Comstock for your overnight stay.

AUGUST PROGRAMS

August 22-23 or 23-24

On-campus lodging is NOT provided as part of the Orientation programs in August. However, limited on campus housing (Centennial Hall) is available on campus at the cost of $35 including tax per night. You can register online beginning on April 4, 2018.

August 27-28

Students who attend Orientation on this date AND who have a Fall 2018 on campus housing contract have the opportunity to move-in early on Sunday, August 26 but you must make prior arrangements with Housing & Residential Life. You will be able to complete an Early Move-in Request beginning August 1. Students are required to pay $24 per night for Sunday and Monday night which will be billed to your student account.

Otherwise there will be no overnight accommodations available for this Orientation program.

Disability/Mobility

Disabilities

We value disability as an aspect of diversity and want to ensure that you are able to fully participate in all programming available to you. If you have a disability or health condition, or suspect you have one, and would like have a confidential discussion about accommodations, please contact the Disability Resource Center (DRC) at 612-626-1333 or [email protected] as soon as possible. Some accommodations may take a few weeks to arrange.

You are also welcome to visit the DRC (180 McNamara) at the end of Day 2 of orientation for a brief informational meeting.  However, if you would like to register with the DRC to arrange formal accommodations, you would need to schedule an initial appointment in advance.

Mobility Issues

If you have a short-term disability (i.e. broken leg) and would have difficulty walking long distances during Orientation, please contact the Orientation & First-Year Programs office for accommodations at 800-234-1979.

Mobility accommodations for Welcome Week can be indicated on Welcome Week Event Selection and accommodations for Transfer Welcome Days can be indicated on the registration form.

Dietary Accommodations

Vegetarian options are available. If you are in need of additional dietary accommodations besides vegetarian, please contact our office at (800) 234-1979 or (612) 624-1979 two weeks prior to your orientation date.

Ramadan

Will you be observing Ramadan during your Orientation? If so, please contact OFYP at (800) 234-1979 or (612) 624-1979 to schedule your meals and request any golf cart accommodations.
